Rough Cuts Film Festival

The Rough Cuts Film Festival is an annual event held at Wake Technical Community College which showcases the work of up-and-coming documentary filmmakers and film students. The festival’s committee created a logo design contest to find the logo they will use moving forward. This logo was chosen by the committee and it is currently in use.

Minimalistic Design

A saw element, a Vinson style camera, and recording light in one design. Simple, but illustrates the name of the festival itself.

How it was used

T-shirts were printed for the staff who worked the event which featured the logo prominently and it was branded on all the print and digital media associated with the event.

Process

The requirements set by the festival entries were simple. The logo must use the name “Rough Cuts” and speak to the brand. Of course, this meant that we had an abundance of creative freedom with the project. My first step was to mentally interpret what I thought the brand was trying to convey. After some thought on this matter, I came to the conclusion that the brand was to be minimalistic yet personable as all the films being shown were by local filmmakers about local topics. To put that brand in a visual context, the logo that I wanted to design had to be simple, symbolic, and resonate with people on a personal level.
